In order to improve security, we have enabled multi-factor authentication for all mailboxes. This means that when logging into your mailbox online, you will need to provide your password and an additional verification step such as a code sent to you by text. Therefore, if somebody manages to get your password, they won't be able to login to your account with just your password. To set up the additional verification method, please follow the steps below.

Either sign in to your account online here or go to this link: http://aka.ms/mfasetup

Sign in to your account and you will be presented with the screen below:

You can now set your phone up to receive a text message containing a code or use the Microsoft Authenticator app. This guide details the Authenticator app set up.

Set up the Authenticator app:

First of all, download the Microsoft Authenticator app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. If you are using a company mobile phone, open the Play Store and find the Microsoft Authenticator app to download. Once downloaded, complete the below.

Change the drop-down to 'Mobile app' and select either 'Receive notifications for verification' or 'Use verification code'. 'Receive notifications for verification' is the easiest option and will be detailed below. Your phone is not controlled by IT after installing this app and is only used to authenticate your account.

Open the Authenticator app that you have already downloaded and follow the steps on the next screen.

Accept the notification on your phone to login and click 'Next'.

Microsoft will ask you to add additional verification in the next step, here you can add your work number or personal number. This is only there as a backup verification method.

Click 'Next' to complete the process. You are now set up with multi-factor authentication and your account is more secure.

Note: You will not be prompted for multi-factor authentication when accessing OWA whilst on the company network (that includes when using the VPN from home).
